Hysterosalpingogram
The examination that has been arranged for you is a relatively simple procedure.

It involves an internal examination. It is similar to a smear test. In addition, a small plastic suction cup is fitted to the cervix, or the neck of the womb, so that a solution opaque to x-rays can be passed into the uterus and tubes to determine if they are patent or not. Sometimes we use a small tube or catheter that we will place in the cervix or uterus.

The procedure should be relatively painless. The more relaxed you can be the easier it is. Seldom is there any major or prolonged discomfort. If you feel the procedure may be especially painful for you, you may like to take one or two Panadol tablets one hour before or you may like to talk to us or your doctor a little more about this aspect of the procedure.

The procedure itself takes only a few minutes, but you can expect to be in the rooms for up to one hour. Part of the time taken is for you to rest after the procedure but we also wait a while before we take a further x-ray to see how the solution drains.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact any of our staff prior to your appointment.
