Using modern imaging techniques, radiologists are able to perform a range of procedures under local anaesthesia, without the need for surgical incisions or general anaesthesia. Thus Interventional Radiology can in many situations replace more invasive and costly procedures with ones that are quicker, safer and cheaper to perform, usually without any overnight hospital stay.
Xray, Fluoroscopy, Ultrasound or CT Scanning may be utilised to guide interventional procedures, the most commonly performed procedures are:
| 1. |
Needle Biopsy to diagnose the nature of any tissue abnormality identified on imaging procedures. |
| 2. |
Catheter placement for drainage of abscesses or other fluid collections at virtually any location in the body. This may either totally avoid surgery, or make any subsequent surgical treatment simpler and safer. |
Auckland Radiology Group has experienced radiologists who specialise in interventional procedures. |
